How to Specify Frame Frog

How to Specify Frame Frog

Instructions for Specifying Frame Frog

Since Frame Frog resides within the throat of the frame and is associated with specific frame preps for each device it serves, it should be installed at the Hollow Metal Shop and its’ scope should be assigned to Spec SECTION 08 11 13 – HOLLOW METAL DOORS AND FRAMES, with stipulation: Frame Frog needs to be quantified in each hardware set so that the spec writer can clearly describe the Frog locations and their purpose.  Frame manufacturers can then prep the frame for all hardware items including Frame Frogs.  The best place to coordinate the location of each Frame Frog is in the hardware sets.  If you have 3 electronic devices in a single opening, then you can specify 3 Frogs, one associated with each device.  The simple approach is to spec your hardware and then pair it with the properly sized Frame Frog model adjacent to each device as shown below:

For specifying kits, simply state: Provide Frame Frogs as a Kit including conduit and accessories at the bottom of each hardware set.

ASSIGN THE FRAME FROG SCOPE TO THE HOLLOW METAL SPEC AS FOLLOWS:

SECTION 08 11 13 – HOLLOW METAL DOORS AND FRAMES

Under SUMMARY, add the following: (We have created some new sub section references here that will be defined later in the spec.)

  1. Hollow metal door frame accessories.
  2. Back-Boxes and Assembly Kits for Electrified Door Hardware.
  3. Mortar-Dust Boxes for Non-Electrified Door Hardware

Under RELATED REQUIREMENTS, add the following:

  1. Section 087100 “Door Hardware” for door hardware for hollow-metal doors. Back-Box Assembly and Conduit Kits for Electrified Door Hardware are identified in the Door Hardware Schedule, but are specified, provided and installed under this SECTION 081213 – HOLLOW METAL FRAMES.
  2. Division 26 and 28 Sections for conduit installed to door frame and Access Control Devices for doors and frames.

Under CORRDINATION, add the following:

  1. Coordinate requirements for installation of door hardware, electrified door hardware, and access control and security systems, including Back-Box Assembly Kits for Electrified Hardware and conduit installed in door frames.

Under SHOP DRAWINGS, add the following:

  1. Details of Back-Box Assembly Kits for Electrified Hardware and conduit installed in door frames, and preparation for electrified hardware, access control systems, and security systems.

Under PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS, add the following:

  1. Back-Box Assembly Kits for Electrified Hardware: Manufactured assemblies listed and labeled by Underwriters Laboratories UL10B and UL10C for concealed installation within hollow-metal frames.

We suggest the insertion of a subsection titled “Door Frame Accessories”.  This would be where you specify Frame Frog as a product or as a kit, and where you can identify where “dust boxes” are to be installed AND NOT INSTALLED.

  1. DOOR FRAME ACCESSORIES
    • Back-Boxes and Assembly Kits for Electrified Hardware: Manufactured back-box and integral conduit connector, installed to inside of door frame.
    • Subject to compliance with requirements, provide the following:
      • Back-Boxes and Assembly Kits for Electrified Hardware: Injection-molded, ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) plastic enclosure manufactured with integral ports. For Kit Assemblies, provide ½” PVC conduit connecting the back boxes within the frame.  Refer to Division 26 and 28 for conduit that will extend from the frame to above the ceiling. Apply QR Code Labels for identification that each frame has been provided with control wiring pathways.
        • BASIS OF DESIGN: FRAME FROG BOXES, OR PREP KITS, as manufactured by FRAME FROG, LLC in Cincinnati, Ohio. https://framefrog.us
  2. Metal Mortar-Dust Boxes
    1. DO NOT PROVIDE DUST BOXES WHERE FRAME FROGS ARE TO BE INSTALLED.  FRAME FROG ACTS AS THE DUST BOX IN THESE INSTANCES.
