Wiring pathways in door openings are often overlooked until they become a significant obstacle. Many projects begin with the assumption that access control wiring can be addressed later, only to find that when the time comes, it becomes a rushed, inefficient, and costly endeavor. Poor planning leads to delays, unexpected costs, and frustrations for installers, developers, architects, and property owners alike.
Frame Frog simplifies the process by providing a structured wiring pathway within the door frame, eliminating last-minute workarounds and ensuring smooth installations from the start. Designed to be both flexible and future-proof, it allows for easy modifications and upgrades without the need for invasive construction or extensive repairs. In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at Frame Frog’s design, installation methods, and the many ways it streamlines the process of wiring electrified hardware in door openings.
What Is Frame Frog?
Frame Frog is a universal wiring pathway solution designed for hollow metal door frames with a 2-inch or larger face. It can be installed in fabrication shops via tack welding or retrofitted on-site using wing tabs. Once installed, it provides a conduit for wiring, eliminating the need for drilling holes or cutting into surrounding walls.
The product comes in two sizes to accommodate different installation needs. The Frame Frog Long (Long) is a versatile, one-size-fits-all option, ideal for larger devices like Electric Power Transfers. The Frame Frog Short, is designed for frame prep openings up to five inches long. Both sizes offer the flexibility needed for various applications, from electric strikes and door position switches to door jamb security cameras.
Frame Frog also includes three different Prep Kits, ensuring that installers have all necessary components for an easy, efficient setup. Constructed from durable ABS plastic and attached to PVC conduits with a multipurpose adhesive, Frame Frog is built for longevity and reliability. Additionally, it meets safety standards by supporting low-voltage wiring up to 30 volts.
Frame Frog has been tested and certified by Underwriters Laboratories, meeting US Standards UL 10B and 10C, as well as the Canadian Standard S104. This certification confirms its suitability for use in fire-rated hollow metal doors and frames for up to three hours. With this industry-leading approval, customers can be confident that Frame Frog not only streamlines wiring installation but also meets the highest safety and building code requirements across the US and Canada.
Installation Options: Fabrication and Field
Frame Frog is designed for both shop and field installations. In fabrication shops, the new steel weld clip design makes it easy to secure the unit to any standard hollow metal frame, replacing the older plastic wing tab. This advancement allows for a smoother, more reliable installation process during manufacturing.
For field installations, Frame Frog can be attached using wing tabs, making it a viable solution for retrofitting existing or replacement frames. These tabs allow the unit to be secured to door frames with depths ranging from 5 ¾ inches to 9 ¼ inches. While some wall surface modifications may be necessary to extend the conduit pathway above the ceiling, once installed, Frame Frog provides a lifetime wiring solution.
One of Frame Frog’s greatest strengths is its adaptability. Unlike traditional wiring methods, which often lock installers into rigid pathways, Frame Frog allows for strategic placement that accommodates both current needs and future upgrades. By planning ahead and integrating Frame Frog during initial construction, building professionals can prevent costly, invasive retrofits down the line.
Eliminating Wiring Challenges for Good
Frame Frog eliminates the common headaches associated with door frame wiring by providing a structured, adaptable solution that streamlines installation and prevents future complications. By incorporating Frame Frog from the beginning, installers, general contractors, architects, and property owners can ensure an efficient wiring process that stands the test of time.
